Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
